Smart Traveler Enrollment Program
Record your travel plans with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), a free online service that allows us to better assist you if there is a family emergency in the United States or a crisis where you are traveling. You’ll also receive updated travel information for countries you plan to visit. In accordance with the Privacy Act, information on your welfare and whereabouts will not be released to others without your express authorization.
U.S. citizens around the world who travel or reside abroad can access the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program at https://step.state.gov/step/.
We encourage all American citizens traveling or living overseas to enroll online or with the local Embassy or Consulate, to register their presence in the country and receive emergency messages from the Embassy.
The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program for American citizens allows you to enroll and update your contact information on the internet at any time, making it easier for you to keep your information current. The site also provides you with up-to-date travel information customized to your unique travel agenda and itinerary.
The data you provide is secured behind Department of State firewalls, accessed only by cleared personnel in Embassies, Consulates, and the Department of State, and releasable only under the provisions of the Privacy Act.

Stay Informed. Sign up for our free Smart Traveler Enrollment Program at https://step.state.gov/step/ to receive the latest travel updates and information. You only need to sign up once, and then you can add and delete trips from your account based on your current travel plans!
Stay Safe. A well-informed traveler is a safer traveler. Our consular officers around the world compile country specific information, travel alerts, warnings, fact sheets and emergency messages to provide you with timely and accurate information about every country where you may travel. We include reports on possible risks and security threats so that you can make informed decisions about your travel plans and activities.
Stay Connected. By connecting with us on we will be able to assist you better in the case of an emergency, such as the loss of your passport while you are abroad. We also assist U.S. citizens in other emergencies, like natural disasters. The travel and contact information you enter into our Smart Traveler Enrollment Program will make it easier for consular officers to contact you and your loved ones during an emergency —including situations where your family or friends in the U.S. are having problems trying to contact you with important news.
Your Privacy Is Paramount. All the personal information you provide to us is protected under the Privacy Act of 1974. This law prohibits us from sharing the information with anyone without your written authorization. Certain exceptions exist, such as when we need to share information on a limited basis in order to protect your safety and welfare in extreme circumstances.
